Network Rail - Gowerton Redoubling Works
Rail is currently undertaking preparation works for the Gowerton redoubling
project that will install a second line adjacent to the single line running
between Cockett and Duffryn with Gowerton station in the middle. The overall
project is to run from the 13/10/2012 – 08/04/2013 with preparation works
leading up to these dates and minor follow up works being undertaken after
project is being funded by the Welsh Assembly Government in connection with
SWWITCH (South West Wales Integrated Transport Consortium) and is being managed
by Network Rail in conjunction with the Loughor Viaduct replacement scheme.
project includes the reinstatement of the currently redundant platform at
Gowerton station and the installation of a new DDA compliant foot bridge. A
number of further improvements to the station including the provision of a CCTV
system will also be completed as part of the works. The works at Gowerton
station will be undertaken from the beginning of October 2012 until the end of
March 2013. The majority of these works will be undertaken during the day
within normal working hours, however some elements of the work including the
installation of the new foot bridge will be carried out in night and weekend
first main element of work is being undertaken between the 12th and
15th October which will include repair works to River Lliw bridge
deck and the replacement of Gowerton station track drainage. Minor cable route
works will also be undertaken.
main track installation work will be undertaken during night shifts, with the
line being blocked between 22:45 and 06:15 when trains are not running on
Monday to Friday nights.
dates of the track works are:
- 5/11/2012 –
8/12/2012 (5 Weeks)
- 5/1/2013 –
11/01/2013 (1 Week – Saturday night to Friday Morning)
- 27/1/2013 –
2/3/2013 (5 Weeks)
these weeks the works will be progressing through the 5 mile section,
commencing at Duffryn, working East through Gowerton towards Cockett. The works
will require three main passes through the site during the dates mentioned
above, hence the noise disturbance will not be continuous throughout these
periods. The work to be carried out is excavation of existing material, laying
of new ballast and finally track installation.
bridge deck is due to be replaced during a line blockage and road closure
between 18:15 (8/12/2012) and 06:15 (10/12/2012).
final commissioning of the works will be carried out between 00:30 (24/03/2013)
and 03:00 (08/04/2013). On completion of the commissioning works the upgrade to
Gowerton station, Duffryn Level crossing improvements, Loughor viaduct and the
second line will all be taken into operational use.
is our number one priority and for this reason a large proportion of this work
must be carried out while trains are not running. Under our license conditions
we are contractually obliged to work, whenever possible, at times that cause
the least disruption to train services. Unfortunately, this means carrying out
a lot of our improvements during the night and at weekends.
equipment to be used means some disturbance is unavoidable, but we will make
every effort to minimise any unnecessary noise. Furthermore, those working on
site are briefed on working responsibly in the local community.
